Biography
Alana Rice grew up in the arid climate of Kamloops, BC, and now happily calls the temperate rainforest of Prince Rupert home. She finds endless inspiration in the magnificent landscape of the North Coast of Canada and along the Skeena River.
She studied Fine Art at the University College of the Cariboo (now TRU), but switched to Arts to earn a BA in History and going on to earn a BEd at the University of Victoria. She returned to school to learn the trade of hairdressing. Alana now breaks up her time by teaching art and textiles at an alternate school, doing hair at a local hair salon, and painting and sketching whenever she can.
Artist Statement
Alana Rice uses the environment of the North Coast of British Columbia to influence her artwork. Working mainly in oil paint with broad brush strokes and palette knife textures she paints impressionistic images of green, lush forests, wandering creeks, mystic oceans, forgotten fishing boats, and silent cargo ships. Rice also works in India ink and watercolour to sketch other areas of Northern BC, capturing the majestic beauty of mountains and lakes. Her paintings and sketches reflect her love of home, and the peace and security she feels being a part of her community.
